Kvismare fågelstation, Sweden - Day 30

Juvenile Marsh Tit
Juvenile female Redstart
Elevator net! Ridiculously awesome!

Overnight the wind dropped to 1 metre/sec to the NW and the sky was clear. This meant that Ässön was our destination for dawn. We set 19 nets including an elevator net, which is a double net set up on a pulli system, meaning instead of 4 shelves, there are 8 on top of each other. Very impressive!

We caught 126 new birds and 5 retraps, of which highlights came in the form of a juvenile Marsh Tit which is the first time Craig has caught Marsh at Ässön. This just proves that they have had a fantastic breeding season in Sweden. We also caught another migrant Marsh Warbler, juvenile female Redstart and 2 Tree Pipit

Non-ringing highlights came in the form of 4 Black Woodpecker flying tantalisingly close to the nets, but sadly evading them. It was still amazing to have 4 Black Woodpeckers landed in trees 30 feet away in full view!

Totals for the morning were: (recaps in brackets)

Sedge Warbler - 12 (1)
